FDA Tobacco Policy Is A Winner And Loser

Last updated on Tuesday, August 1, 2017

(UNDATED) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a plan for bringing all tobacco and e-smoking products under federal regulation, describing it as a multi-year roadmap to protect kids and reduce tobacco-related death and disease.

Among items on the FDA's agenda is an effort to reduce the nicotine content of smoking products as a means for decreasing their addictiveness.

The FDA's announcement was welcomed by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids as "a bold and comprehensive vision."

But, the Campaign said the FDA's new agenda also delays implementation of a 2016 regulation that was set to expand the agency's regulatory jurisdiction to e-cigarettes and cigars; and that the delay would allow sales of kid-friendly flavored products to continue.
