(GRANGER) - U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly released the following statement after the U.S. Treasury announced sanctions against Chinese and Russian individuals and companies that are allowing North Korea to press forward with its missile program and development of a nuclear missile.

Donnelly said, "I support strong sanctions against those enabling North Korea to advance its missile program, and I am pleased by the U.S. Treasury's action today. As I have said, North Korea should be our top national security priority in the Pacific, and we must focus the full economic and diplomatic force of our nation on this problem--and get other countries in the region to do the same. I will continue working with my colleagues to maintain our nuclear arsenal as a deterrent, strengthen our missile defense, and ensure the Administration has the tools it needs to be successful."

Recently, Donnelly helped the Senate pass bipartisan legislation, which President Trump signed into law, that would increase sanctions on North Korea. And, as Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, Donnelly has led efforts to increase funding for U.S. missile defense programs and supported provisions in this year's national defense bill to significantly strengthen the U.S. homeland missile defense system against the threat of an intercontinental ballistic missile attack.

As Ranking Member of the Senate Banking Subcommittee on National Security and International Trade and Finance, Donnelly co-led a hearing with Chairman Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) to assess U.S. and international sanctions against North Korea and China in relation to North Korea's nuclear missile program.
