Last updated on Tuesday, August 8, 2017

(GARY) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the death of 24-year-old Hammond resident Kaitlynn Boswinkle.

At approximately 7:30 a.m. on Saturday Kaitlynn Boswinkle and two friends arrived at Marquette Beach and entered the water to swim. The three friends exited the water for a short time before Kaitlynn returned to the water and swam to a buoy approximately 200 feet from shore.

The two friends on the beach lost sight of Kaitlynn and entered the water to look for her. Struggling in three to five foot waves and fighting a strong current, one of the friends exited the water and called 911.

Emergency responders arrived on scene and began to search for Kaitlynn. At approximately 9:31 a.m. a beachgoer observed the victim through a pair of binoculars and her body was recovered by Gary Police and Fire.

The incident is still under investigation and is currently believed to be drowning related.

Assisting agencies include Gary Police and Fire, Lake County Helicopter and Marine Unit, and the Lake County Coroner. Indiana Conservation Officers are responsible for the investigation of all drownings occurring in state waters.
