American Heart Association's Indiana Heart Walks Promote Physical Activity And Healthy Living

Last updated on Tuesday, August 22, 2017

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The American Heart Association will host five Heart Walks in Indiana this fall as part of its Healthy For Good initiative to reduce risks for heart disease and stroke.

Approximately two in three American adults and one in three American children are overweight or obese - and this number continues to grow. Worldwide, physical inactivity - 35 percent - is now more prevalent than smoking - 26 percent - and is responsible for more deaths, according to the American Heart Association, the world's leading voluntary health organization devoted to fighting cardiovascular disease.

The AHA recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week to lower your risk of heart disease and stroke, help manage stress and quality of sleep, and improve overall health and wellbeing.

Regular physical activity can help you look and feel better. It boosts your energy, strength, mood, and ability to maintain a healthy weight. It can help lower blood pressure, raise good cholesterol levels, and improve blood flow.

According to the AHA, people who are physically active and at a healthy weight live about seven years longer on average than those who are not active. For every hour of brisk walking, life expectancy for some people may increase by two hours.

The Heart Walk is one of the American Heart Association's signature fundraising events, combining an individual's quest for health with their "why" for supporting the AHA - whether it's a loved one's experience with cardiovascular disease or the promise of a better future for younger generations. More than a million people across the United States are joining American Heart Association Heart Walks to take stands against heart disease and stroke and help us all be Healthy For Good.
