Union Mills Teen Killed In LaPorte County Off Road Vehicle Crash

(WANATAH) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a fatal off road vehicle (ORV) crash that occurred shortly after midnight in the area of 1100 W and 1500 S on July 23rd.

LaPorte County Dispatch received a 911 call reporting the off road vehicle crash and that CPR was being performed on the victim, 19 year old David Wakefield Williams Jr. of Union Mills.

The initial investigation revealed that shortly after midnight three people were riding in a 2013 Polaris Ranger in a field when the driver, 20 year old Jacob Clindaniel of Hanna, IN, made a sharp turn at a high rate of speed, causing the ORV to flip onto its side landing on top of Williams. Witnesses report Williams was unresponsive and CPR was started as 911 was called.

First responders and LaPorte County EMS responded, transporting Williams to Porter Regional Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The ORV was equipped with seatbelts that were not used and helmets were not worn at the time of the incident.

It was determined the operator was not under the influence of alcohol however, both passengers may have been consuming alcohol prior to the incident.

The operator and second passenger were uninjured. The incident remains under investigation and no criminal charges have been filed at this time. Assisting agencies include LaPorte County Sheriff's Office, LaPorte County EMS, and Cass Clinton Volunteer Fire Department.
