Last updated on Wednesday, July 19, 2017

(UNDATED) - The number of law enforcement fatalities is on the rise across the country.

Through the first six months of 2017, National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund President and CEO Craig Floyd said the numbers are very troubling.

Georgia and New York lead the way with five officer fatalities so far this year. California, Florida and Texas each had four officer fatalities.

Traffic-related incidents are the leading cause of fatalities, claiming the lives of 26 officers.

That's an increase of 24-percent over the same time period in 2016.

Firearm-related fatalities were second, claiming the lives of 23 officers, which is an increase of 10-percent over 2016.
