(INDIANAPOLIS) - For decades, downtown Indianapolis dwellers have passed by the original Coca-Cola bottling plant on Mass Ave., but next month, its doors will open to the public for tours on Aug. 12 from 1-5 p.m. to give the community a taste of history.
The plant was built in 1931, but Coca-Cola left its Mass Ave. home in 1964 after Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Tony Hulman bought the franchise and moved its bottling operations to Speedway. He used the original building to house his vintage collection of cars.
In 1968, it was sold to Indianapolis Public Schools where the building was used as a central kitchen to prepare school lunches, among other things.
The tour will also mark the 50th anniversary of the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission.
