(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly helped the Senate pass bipartisan legislation Thursday that would increase sanctions on Russia, Iran, and North Korea.

The Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act would do the following: increase sanctions on Iran for its ballistic missile program, support for terrorism, human rights violations, and transfers of weapons to or from Iran; strengthen U.S. sanctions against Russia in response to Russian interference in the 2016 elections; and sanction North Korean shipping and foreign entities that provide financial services to North Korea or those that produce goods using North Korean prison labor or forced labor.

The bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this week and now heads to President Trump's desk to be signed into law.

Donnelly, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said, "This bipartisan bill would send a clear message that the United States will continue to lead the way in showing our adversaries that their actions have consequences. Iran, Russia, and North Korea continue to act in unacceptable ways both toward our country and our allies. Now is a critical time to act decisively and impose sanctions on these countries, and I hope the President signs this commonsense legislation into law quickly."

Thursday's bill includes legislation that Donnelly co-led, the Countering Iran's Destabilizing Activities Act, which passed the Senate in June on a 98-2 vote.
