(WASHINGTON D.C) - Washington, D.C. is the first jurisdiction in the nation to offer driver’s licenses with a gender-neutral option.
The new gender neutral identifier "X" is now featured alongside "M" and "F" to accommodate D.C. residents who identify as a "non-binary" gender as well as people who identify as transgender.
Several people lined up outside a District of Columbia Department of Motor Vehicles office before it opened Tuesday morning to become among the first to receive a license with the new gender option, local media reported.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser had announced the addition of the gender-neutral option Friday.
"Washington, DC has long been a leader in LGBTQ rights and gender issues, and this change is the most recent example of our city's commitment to inclusivity," Bowser said in a statement.
One June 15, Oregon became the first state to approve gender-neutral driver's licenses. They will be issued starting Monday.
