Bill On Coverage For Reserve Police Officers Now Law

Last updated on Wednesday, June 7, 2017

(STATEHOUSE) - State Representative Peggy Mayfield’s bill was signed into law recently that will provide benefits to Indiana’s reserve police officers.

The reserve police officers are volunteers and often hold full time jobs.

"Volunteers often don't get the same resources that full-time officers do," Mayfield said. "These people dedicate their free time to keeping their communities safe, and they deserve to be protected as well."

Mayfield said that in the past it was never required that reserve police officers have coverage for injuries or illnesses that occur in the line of duty.

"Policymakers need to look at any adjustments that should be made for these reserve officers, especially since some smaller communities rely so heavily on these volunteers," Mayfield said.

Below is a segment from "Around the House", the House Republican Caucus blog, on the new law.
