Shootings Third Leading Cause Of Death for Americans Under 18

(UNDATED) - Shootings are now the third leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 18.

That's according to researchers for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who also found that 5,800 children are treated for gunshot wounds each year and survive.

Researchers say 38 percent of child gun deaths are suicides, six percent are the result of accidental shootings.

The report, based on data from three national databases, is published in the journal 'Pediatrics.
