Juvenile Injured After Off-Road Vehicle Crash

(PITTSBURG) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating an off-road vehicle (ORV) accident involving a head injury that occurred Wednesday afternoon near Pittsburg in Carroll County.

Witnesses at the scene stated a 14-year-old male, of Delphi ,was operating a 1999 Yamaha Bear Tracker four-wheeler in the area of County Road 935 West, just south of County Road 310 North. He was accompanied on the ORV by an 11- year-old male passenger and a 14-year-old male passenger, both of Delphi.

As they were traveling from a grass field onto the roadway, the 14-year-old passenger's ball cap flew off of his head. In an attempt to catch the ball cap, the 14-year-old passenger lost his balance and fell off of the four-wheeler, hitting his head on the roadway. He suffered a serious head injury was airlifted by IU Health Lifeline to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis for treatment.

No safety equipment was being worn at the time of the crash.

Indiana Conservation Officers strongly encourage anyone operating an ORV to wear the proper protective equipment along with a helmet. A new state law, effective July 1, requires operators and passengers of an ORV, that are under the age of 18, to wear a DOT approved helmet. A valid driver's license is required while operating on a public roadway where permitted.

Agencies assisting on the scene included the Carroll County Sheriff's Department, Indiana State Police, Carroll County EMS, Delphi Fire Department, Carroll County EMA, and Indiana University Health Lifeline.
