(UNDATED) - Next April, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will begin mailing renumbered Medicare cards to the health program’s 57.7 million enrollees to comply with a law that mandated the removal of Social Security Numbers from Medicare cards.
The renumbered cards are intended to prevent identity theft, and will replace the decades-old system in which a person's Social Security Number and Medicare account number were identical.
