(FORT WAYNE) - The community is invited to honor fallen officers by giving blood at one of numerous 11th annual Fallen Officer Blood Drives held by the American Red Cross this summer.

This statewide campaign pays tribute to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice and raises awareness of the need for blood.

In 2001, Indiana resident Janice Starnes lost her husband, Sergeant Daniel Starnes, while he was serving in the line of duty.

Her experience prompted her to begin the Fallen Officer Blood Drive campaign in 2007, and she has coordinated the campaign each year since.

"Blood drives continue to grow and our officers are not forgotten thanks to the people who come to give blood in their memory," said Starnes.

"Giving blood at one of these special blood drives is a wonderful way to remember those officers who have lost their lives and honor them with a gift that can help someone else continue to live," said Rodney Wilson, communications manager for the Red Cross.

More than 44,700 pints of blood have been donated through the Red Cross since the 2007 start of the Fallen Officer blood drives, with 2,842 of those donations given last year. Blood and platelet donations are needed every day for patients with many serious medical conditions.

Accident and burn victims, heart surgery patients, organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease may all need blood. By giving blood through the Red Cross, you could help patients being treated at more than 80 hospitals across Indiana.

This blood donation campaign comes at an important time of year. Blood and platelet donations often decline during the summer months when busy summer schedules and vacation plans can cause some donors to be less available to give. Additionally, blood donations at high school and college blood drives, which account for as much as 20 percent of blood donations during the school year, decline when many schools are out of session. But, the need for blood remains constant all summer long.

Those who come to donate with the Red Cross now through Sept. 4 can receive an exclusive Cedar Fair ticket offer that helps support the Red Cross, and enter to win one of two grand prize packages for four to Knott's Berry Farm in California or Cedar Point in Ohio.

Blood drive participants can go to redcrossblood.org/cedarfair to purchase discounted tickets for gate admission and enter to win one of the two grand prize packages. For each ticket purchased through the website, Cedar Fair will donate $2 to the Red Cross to support its humanitarian mission.

Terms and conditions apply and are available at redcrossblood.org/cedarfair.
