Last updated on Friday, May 12, 2017

(EVANSVILLE) - The Indiana State Board of Education approved of a course of action with Ball State University as the authorizer for Hoosier Virtual Academy and also approved of the ILEARN plan that will allow the Indiana Department of Education to pursue the Request for Proposal (RFP) process during its monthly business meeting held at the University of Evansville campus in Evansville.

The Board voted 6-1 to reduce the administrative fee that Ball State receives as the authorizer from 3 percent to 1 percent, ensuring that more funds (approximately $300,000 per year based on current enrollment) are directed to educating the students attending Hoosier Academy. Further, the Board voted 6-1 to freeze enrollment effective immediately with no re-enrollment of student who drop out. However, siblings of those who are currently enrolled would be allowed to enroll.

Additionally, the Board also voted 8-0 to approve of the ILEARN plan memo and to allow the Indiana Department of Education to process with the RFP process. The memo regarding the ILEARN plan can be found here.

Finally, the Board unanimously approved of allowing Dr. Byron Ernest to run for Chair of the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) Board of Directors. According to NASBE procedure, candidates must submit a letter of support from the state board of education on which they serve in order to be an officer. "If elected, serving NASBE, the State of Indiana, the interests of our students and the State Board would be a tremendous honor" said Dr. Ernest.
