Last updated on Tuesday, May 23, 2017

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Department of Education celebrated the State’s first ever cohort of students to receive a certificate in multilingual proficiency. Multilingual proficiency refers to having a functional level of proficiency in both the English language and one or more other languages.

"We live in a world where opportunities to prepare our students for success on a global level give them an edge," said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. "I am proud of these students for their hard work to receive this certificate. If their commitment to earning this is reflective of their approach to life, I know they will go on to accomplish great things."

The Certificate of Multilingual Proficiency is a recognition program and validation of student achievement in language proficiency both in English and another language. This is a celebration for both world language students and English Learners alike as both work hard to develop sustained functional abilities in a new language. Indiana's Certificate asks that students achieve an
Intermediate High level of proficiency which is based on the ACTFL Proficiency Scale found here. The following list of schools delineates the Indiana high schools that have opted to honor the graduates of the Class of 2017 by participating in the Certificate of Multilingual Proficiency program.

For the 2016-17 school year, an estimated 700 students will be awarded the Certificate of Multilingual Proficiency.

Participating High Schools

The Indiana Certificate of Multilingual Proficiency is an award made by a participating school corporation, charter school or accredited nonpublic high school designating on a student's transcript the student has attained a high level of proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English. The Certificate confirms the attainment of proficiency in multiple languages by students for employers and universities. It is a statement of accomplishment that helps to signal evidence of a student's readiness for career and college, and for engagement as a global citizen.
