(NORTH TERRE HAUTE) - Authorities say a man died and his passenger was critically injury when he disregarded crossing gates and warning lights and drove his truck into the path of a freight train in the second railroad-related fatality in as many days in western Indiana's Vigo County.

Sheriff Greg Ewing says 54-year-old Jack Cheesman of Terre Haute sped toward the crossing north of Terre Haute around 5 a.m. Thursday in a bid to beat the train. He says Cheesman was ejected from his pickup and pronounced dead at the scene, and 26-year-old Rachel Camp of Terre Haute was extricated by firefighters. She's in critical condition in an Indianapolis hospital.

The collision occurred less than 18 hours after a tractor collided with a freight train a few miles away, killing a Terre Haute man.
