(UNDATED) - Alzheimer's disease, a fatal form of dementia that has become the nation's sixth leading cause of death, saw its death rate soar by 55 percent between 1999 and 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.

In 2014, the disease accounted for 3.6 percent of all U.S. deaths.

CDC says the rate increased from 16.5 per 100,000 persons in 1999 to 25.4 per 100,000 in 2014.
