(WASHINGTON) - President Donald Trump will be donating his first quarter salary to the National Park Service (NPS), a move aimed at fulfilling a promise he made during the transition to take home as little pay as possible.

Washington Desk of Talk Media New reports, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer made the announcement Monday morning and presented a check for $78,333.32 to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and Tyrone Brandyburg, the superintendent of Harper's Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia.

"It is every penny the president received his first quarter," Spicer said.

Addressing reporters afterwards, Zinke said the bulk of the donation was aimed at taking care of the battlefields on American soil.

The announcement comes after the Trump administration released a budget proposal calling for $1.5 billion in cuts from the Interior Department, which overseas NPS.

While the details of how the departments disperse their funds was intentionally left vague, the proposed budget does call for investing additional funds to NPS' "deferred maintenance projects."

Spicer told reporters last month that the president intended to donate his salary and wanted the press to decide where it should go.

Monday's decision, however, was made after the president consulted with White House counsel, Spicer said.
