(UNDATED) - With prom and graduation approaching, Mothers Against Drunk Driving's® Indiana and IU Health West are encouraging parents to have intentional, ongoing conversations with their teens about the dangers and consequences of drinking before age 21.

As part of the Power of Parents® program, MADD and National Presenting Sponsor Nationwide® released five new topical guides to empower parents to have potentially lifesaving conversations.

MADD Indiana will host a Power Talk 21, an Underage Drinking Prevention Conference for Parents and their teens at the Plainfield Aquatic Center. All Parents and their middle school to high school aged are welcome. Door prizes and lunch from Chick Filet will be offered.

The event will be held Saturday, April 22 at 10 a.m. at the Plainfield Aquatic Center, 651 Vestal Rd, Plainfield, IN 46168

The following people will be in attendance:

  • Lisa Hutchenson, The Indiana Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking
  • Lael Hill, MADD Indiana, Lead Victim Services Specialist
  • Mark Kaiser, Indiana Teen Institute, SADD
  • Loren Delp, Hendricks County Prosecutors Office
  • Ashley English, The Willow Center
  • Dr. Amanda Gripe, IU Health West
  • Mathew Bigler, Ladendorf Law
  • Craig Wildaur, IMPD

Excessive teen drinking kills about 4,300 people each year -- that's more than all illegal drugs combined.

Two out of three underage drinking deaths do not involve a vehicle.

The earlier a young person begins drinking (age 14-15), the more likely they will become drunk drivers and alcohol dependent as an adult.
