Indian National Admits Guilt In Telephone Scam

Last updated on Tuesday, April 18, 2017

(UNDATED) - Bharatkumar Patel (aka Bharat Patel), 43, an Indian national who resided in Midlothian, Ill., pleaded guilty to operating an India-based calling center that bilked U.S. citizens out of millions of dollars through various fraud and money laundering schemes, the Department of Justice said.

As part of the fraud, Patel's telemarketers impersonated officials from the Internal Revenue Service or U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and threatened victims with arrest or deportation if they did not pay alleged debts owed to the "government."
