(UNDATED) - Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse indicates that college students are "at a significantly higher risk" of using marijuana than those not enrolled in college, and said the finding underscores "the need for improved prevention efforts."

The study comes at a time when voters and legislatures in 29 states have approved ballot initiatives and legislation to decriminalize or legalize the use of marijuana for recreational or medicinal purposes.

NIDA said the increased probability of past-year marijuana use for those enrolled in college was 51% in 2015, 41% in 2014, and 31% in 2013.
