CDC Counted 24,029 Foodborne Illnesses In 2016

(UNDATED) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tabulated 24,029 foodborne infections in 2016, resulting in 5,512 hospitalizations and 98 deaths.

Talk Media News reports, the number and leading causes of last year's illnesses were Campylobacter (8,547), Salmonella (8,172), Shigella (2,913), E. coli (1,845), Cryptosporidium (1,816), Yersinia (302), Vibrio (252), Listeria (127) and Cyclospora (55).

The Consumer Federation of America said the CDC's data showed there has been little progress on reducing illnesses from the major foodborne pathogens.
