(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Judicial Nominating Commission selected the Hon. Vicki L. Carmichael, the Hon. Christopher M. Goff, and the Hon. Matthew C. Kincaid as the three nominees for the Indiana Supreme Court.
The Commission will submit a report to Governor Eric Holcomb in the upcoming days. Once the report is submitted, the Governor has 60 days to appoint one of the nominees to the Court.
According to the Indiana Constitution and state statute, the seven-member Commission must recruit and select candidates to fill vacancies on Indiana appellate courts. Justice Robert D. Rucker, one of five Supreme Court justices, is retiring May 12 after 26 years on the bench.
In January 2017, Justice Rucker announced he would retire. Applications for the 110th Supreme Court judicial position were due March 3. The Commission considered applicants' legal education, writings, reputation in the practice of law, and other pertinent information. It also conducted in-person public interviews of twenty applicants. It announced eleven finalists in March and the finalists were again publicly interviewed over a two-day period in April. After deliberations in executive session, the Commission publicly voted to send the three nominees (Carmichael, Goff, and Kincaid) to the Governor.
