(INDIANAPOLIS) - Vincennes University’s American Sign Language (ASL) program will undergo a name change effective with the fall 2017 semester. The program’s new name will be American Sign Language and Deaf Studies.
"The name change is a reflection of an innovative expansion to the curriculum which provides for more in-depth American Sign Language and Deaf Culture and Community courses for VU students," said Dr. Cynthia Sanders, program chair. "Graduates from this program can use their degree to pursue a bachelor of arts in interpreting or can carry it forward into any other degree or career that intersects with the lives of deaf individuals."
Vincennes University is the only public college in the state of Indiana to offer an associate degree in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies. Established in 1990, the program is uniquely located on the campus of the Indiana School for the Deaf and offers a fully immersive learning environment for VU students.
Recently, both Dr. Sanders and the VU ASL program were honored by the Willard American Sign Language Teacher's Association for its generous support and commitment to WASLTA and the Deaf Community. Faculty members Janet Schwall and Cynthia Sanders were also presented with the WASLTA President's Award for outstanding dedication and service to WASLTA and the deaf community.
