(INDIANAPOLIS) - In partnership with the National Youth Science Camp, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) announced Thursday the selection of two students to serve as Indiana delegates for the 2017 National Youth Science Camp (NYSC).
The two selected students are seniors Hannah Komanapalli from Muncie and Isabelle Turner from Decatur. Both students attend the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities.
"Growing our students' passion for subjects such as science, technology, engineering, and math is so vital to the future success of the students and our state," said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. "I congratulate Hannah and Isabelle and am grateful for their opportunity to join such an amazing group of talented students to share ideas and learn."
Established in 1963, NYSC brings together delegates from all 50 states and is centered around the exchanging of ideas with leading scientists and other professionals from academic, governmental and corporate worlds. Lectures and hands-on research projects are presented by scientists from across the United States who work on some of the most forward thinking topics in science today. Topics include: cyber security, curing Alzheimer's disease, global climate change, invention and innovation, virtual and augmented reality, and the Internet of Things. Delegates to the NYSC are challenged to explore new areas in art, music, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Delegates also present seminars covering their own areas of research and interest.
NYSC's diverse academic program is complemented by an outdoor recreation program, which leverages the Science Camp's location in the Monongahela National Forest. The Science Camp's outdoor program offers backpacking, caving, rock climbing, kayaking, and mountain biking.
