Jasper Man Arrested After Failing To Return From Work Release

Last updated on Monday, March 27, 2017

(SPENCER CO.) - A Jasper man sentenced to serve time in the Dubois County Work Release program was arrested Friday afternoon after failing to return to the detention center for nearly three weeks.

On Tuesday, March 7, the Dubois County Circuit Court issued an arrest warrant for 20-year-old Zachery R. Uppencamp of Jasper, for a Level 6 Felony charge of Failing to Return to Lawful Detention. Uppencamp was fulfilling a sentence he received after pleading guilty to charges from an August 20, 2016 case in which he was arrested for battering a pregnant woman.

This afternoon, Master Trooper Trey Lytton and Trooper Brock Werne attempted to locate Uppencamp in an apartment on State Road 62 in Saint Meinrad. Troopers had received information that Uppencamp had been staying in this location. After searching the apartment, Troopers noticed a man on a balcony to another apartment unit. After asking the man to identify himself, the man entered the apartment, ran down the stairs, and down the street away from Troopers.

A short time later, the State Police Post in Jasper received a telephone call, informing them that Uppencamp was seen walking down a street in Saint Meinrad. Troopers, along with officers from the Santa Claus Police Department, arrived at 12905 East Brewery Street, Apartment 8, where they learned Uppencamp was supposed to be. After entering, officers found Uppencamp and placed him into custody.

Uppencamp was transported to the Dubois County Security Center on the felony warrant for failure to return to lawful detention. Additional charges are pending through Spencer County.
