(WASHINGTON D.C.) - The Regeneron Science Talent Search, founded and produced by the Society for Science & the Public, is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. It recognizes and empowers the most promising young scientists in the U.S. who are creating the ideas and solutions that will address our world’s most urgent challenges.
Forty finalists from across the country will gather in Washington, D.C. March 9-15 to display their science research and compete for more than $1.8 Million in top awards. This year, Regeneron, a leading science and technology company delivering life-transforming medicines for serious diseases, becomes only the third sponsor of the Science Talent Search, following previous sponsors Westinghouse and Intel. As part of its 10-year, $100 million commitment, Regeneron has significantly increased awards to better reward the best and brightest young talent and energize the next generation of groundbreaking minds. Regeneron has nearly doubled the overall award distribution to $3.1 million annually, and increased the top award to $250,000. The second-place finalist receives $175,000 and the third-prize winner gets a $150,000 award. In addition to the top 10 monetary awards, each of the 30 remaining finalists receives at least $25,000 in awards after attending the event in D.C.
The 2017 finalists' research projects include a new function for a protein that may impact skin regeneration in burn victims and disease progression in squamous cell carcinoma; a computational model demonstrating the effect of carbon tax policies on the global agricultural economy; and an "outer space GPS system" to catalogue, track and prevent collisions with space debris.
Over the past 75 years, Science Talent Search alumni have received some of the world's most coveted science and math honors including 11 National Medals of Science, four Breakthrough Prizes, 18 MacArthur Foundation Fellowships, two Fields Medals, and 12 Nobel Prizes.
Arjun Ramani, West Lafayette, is an 18 yr old senior from West Lafayette Junior-Senior High School. Arjun blended the mathematical field of graph theory with computer programming for his Regeneron Science Talent Search computer science project where he developed a new mathematical method that can greatly accelerate the process of network evaluation. He is president of both the debate team and math club and plays varsity tennis. He also plays the violin and volunteers in teen court and at the local science museum.
