(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) announced, students from around Indiana gathered at Ball State University to compete and participate in the inaugural Indiana Technology Student Association (TSA) State Conference. The conference was held this past Saturday, March 4, 2017.
"Hosting the Indiana Technology State Conference is about promoting and recognizing our engineering and technology programs throughout the state, and providing students with both individual and team opportunities to compete in a variety of engineering and technology related events," said Mary Rinehart, IDOE Engineering and Technology State Program Leader and State Conference Advisor. "Research tells us students that participate in Career and Technical Student Organizations are more likely to graduate with higher grade point averages, and enroll in higher education."
A total of 82 students participated in 13 different competitive events related to engineering and technology, including; engineering design, dragster, computer integrated manufacturing, and coding. The conference also included leadership sessions and campus tours. Students hailed from five different high schools: Floyd Central High School, Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center, Sullivan High School, Penn High School, and Kankakee Valley High School. In its first year, Indiana TSA has six total chapters.
TSA is an intra-curricular, meaning that teachers and students can use competitive events as class projects. TSA serves students in engineering and technology courses at both the middle and high school level and is one of Indiana's eight Career and Technical Student Organizations. Moving forward, students will represent Indiana at the National Conference in Orlando, FL in June, 2017.
Indiana TSA looks forward to growing the membership by reaching out to high schools with active Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs, and supporting schools that start local chapters.
