(INDIANAPOLIS) - Hoosiers are responding to the need for animal feed in Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma because of wildfires that have devastated parts of those states.
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb Friday directed the state to ease regulations for oversize loads of hay transported by truck. Oversize permits are required for any load wider than 8 feet, 6 inches.
Permits for wide loads of hay traveling from or through Indiana through April 8, 2017, will:
These continuous travel oversize permits will only be issued to those hauling hay in direct response to disaster relief efforts. Drivers must abide by all other oversize permit regulations including using oversize load signs and flagging, using clearance lights instead of flags at the edges of loads while traveling at night, and obeying travel restrictions due to hazardous weather conditions and/or visibility less than 500 feet.
The Indiana Department of Revenue, Motor Carrier Services Division will assist those seeking a continuous travel oversize permit for loads of hay. Contact James Vest, (317) 615-7247 or Stephanie Bailey, (317) 615-7256 during the hours of 8am - 4:30pm EDT, Monday through Friday to request a permit. Haulers should be ready to provide the route they plan to travel so it can be reviewed for road restrictions and closures.
