Hoosier Veterans Community Ablaze After Incendiary Remarks By State Senator

Last updated on Monday, March 6, 2017

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The American Legion, Department of Indiana is hosting a press conference as an Indiana senator advises the veterans community to not get greedy after the Senate nixed plans for a lottery ticket to benefit Hoosier veterans.

State Sen. Ron Alting is quoted by the Evansville Courier as advising the veterans community to not, "let greed overrun you on this bill," and to, "accept what we can get," after the Indiana Senate nixed plans for a lottery ticket to benefit homeless veterans and other veteran related programs.

"Indiana consistently stands near the bottom of the list when it comes to taking care of veterans," said Indiana Legion Cmdr. James B. May of Bloomington, Ind. "Senator Alting is quoted recommending we not get greedy. I say we are just getting started."

The lottery ticket could potentially generate millions annually for the Hoosier veterans community. Instead, Senate Bill 517 verbiage was changed to earmark $500,000 annually to Indiana veterans and passed the Senate to move to the House next week.

"While this bill is a welcome start, there is a greater need in the Indiana veteran community," said May. "The men and women that served our nation are not greedy because they want jobs, homes and healthcare. They've answered the call of our nation, they're voice deserves to be heard and we intend to exercise that right."

The press conference will immediately follow the Indiana Legion State Oratorical Scholarship Contest featuring Indiana Rep. Karlee Macer on the judging panel.

The press conference is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 5, at The American Legion National Headquarters Building downtown at 700 N. Pennsylvania St., IN, 46204, featuring Indiana Legion Cmdr. James B. May and Service Office Director John Hickey.
