(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee heard House Bill 1010 on commitment to the Department of Correction(DOC) for a Level 6 felony.
Sponsor Senator Todd Young explained that the bill amends the law limiting the circumstances under which a person convicted of a Level 6 felony can be committed to the Department of Correction.
The bill states that a person convicted of a Level 6 felony can be committed to the DOC if:
1. the commitment is due to the revocation of the person's sentence for violating probation, parole, or community corrections and the revocation of the person's sentence is due to a new criminal offense; or
2. the person is convicted of a Level 6 felony and the sentence for that felony is ordered to be served consecutively to the sentence for another felony.
Indiana Public Defender Council Executive Director Larry Landis testified on behalf of the Justice Reinvestment Advisory Council and explained that the bill was recommended by the Advisory Council.
The bill passed 7-0.
