School Bus Driver Misses Intersection Stop In Fog, Travels Off Roadway

Last updated on Thursday, February 23, 2017

(SULLIVAN CO.) - On Wednesday morning a school bus traveled off the roadway and into a field during the early morning fog.

The accident happened at 7:17 a.m. at the intersection of State Road 48 and State Road 63. Indiana State Police and Sullivan County Sheriff's officers responded.

According to an Indiana State Police report, a 2003 Freightliner school bus, driven by 43-year-old Brian L. Monroe of Graysville, was westbound on SR 48 approaching the SR 63 intersection. Due to heavy fog, Moyer failed to notice the stop sign in time, applied his brakes, and skidded off the roadway into a field. There was no damage to the bus.

There were 27 students aboard the Rural Community Academy school bus at the time. Only one student, an 11-year-old male, reported any injuries. He was taken to Sullivan County Community Hospital by his family after complaining of head pain.

There were no citations issued and excessive speed was not a factor.

Representatives from the Rural Community Academy School were present at the scene as well as another bus from RCA to transport the students onto school. Various families of the students were present as well.

The incident was investigated by ISP Master Trooper Polly Blackburn. Assisting were Sullivan County Sheriff's deputies Carl Melchert and Ron Elliott.
