Man Flees From Police, Causes Fatal Accident, 13-Year-Old Dies

(HAMMOND) - Shortly before 5 p.m. On Thursday Indiana State Police were called by Hammond Police to investigate a fatal crash.

According to Troopers, the driver 31-year-old Donnell Howard Jr. of Highland was arrested after he fled in a 2010 Dodge Durango from East Chicago Police and entered the City of Hammond where Hammond Police joined the pursuit.

The Durange was traveling east on Gostlin Street when it entered into the intersection of Gostlin and Columbia Avenue and hit the driver's side of a Chevrolet Equinox. The Equinox was traveling northbound on Columbia Avenue and had a green light.

The Durango came to a stop in the right lane of westbound lane of Gostlin Street, just east of the intersection. The Equinox went through a fence and came to a stop in the grassy area just before the parking lot of Lang Ice Service.

The driver of the Equinox, 57-year-old Theresa Paramo of Whiting, suffered critical injuries and was flown by medical helicopter to Christ Hospital in Illinois. Her granddaughter, 13-year-old Julianna Chambers, also of Whiting, died of her injuries at Saint Margaret's Hospital in Hammond.

Howard was arrested by East Chicago Police. His passenger 27-year-old Jessica Pichon of Danville, Illinois, suffered minor injuries and was transported to North Lake Methodist Hospital in Gary for treatment.
