(INDIANAPOLIS) - Spay-Neuter Services of Indiana (SNSI) and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) invite the public to attend an awards celebration recognizing Indiana Representatives Mike Karickhoff and Linda Lawson for their work to ensure the passage of legislation to reduce pet homelessness and save animal lives.
The legislation, years in the making, passed in 2016, and ensures that dogs and cats are spayed/neutered prior to adoption from shelters and rescue groups. Spaying and neutering is a proven strategy for reducing both shelter intake and euthanasia.
The awards ceremony takes place at the Indiana Statehouse, 200 West Washington Street, North Atrium, 2nd Floor, in Indianapolis on Monday, February 13, from noon to 12:30 p.m. Animal lovers and supporters are encouraged to join the celebration. The event is free, and organizers request an RSVP.
"Spay/Neuter before adoption is a 'best practice,' because it prevents adopted pets from reproducing, avoiding shelter overpopulation later," said Cheri Storms, Executive Director of SNSI. "We want to take this opportunity to thank Representatives Karickhoff and Lawson for leading Indiana in adopting this strategic approach."
"Indiana joins 33 other states with similar laws that require dogs and cats to be fixed prior to adoption," added Vicki Deisner, Midwest Legislative Director for the ASPCA. "The ASPCA is grateful to Representatives Karickhoff and Lawson for their vital legislative work on behalf of Indiana's cats and dogs."
