(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly met today with Acting Secretary of the Army Robert Speer today to discuss exempting Crane Army Ammunition Activity (CAAA) from President Trump’s federal hiring freeze.
About 130 Hoosiers could be harmed by the freeze, including four who were impacted last week and 80 more who could be impacted next week.
Donnelly said after the meeting, "Secretary Speer and I had a productive meeting this morning, and I am hopeful that we will resolve this situation working with the Army and Crane leadership before any other Hoosier employee is impacted. I will continue working with Army and Navy leaders to ensure that Crane and its workers can keep doing the vital work necessary to support our troops and protect our national security."
Last weekend Donnelly sent a letter to Secretary of Defense James Mattis asking that the CAAA be exempt from the freeze. Roughly 25 percent of the entire U.S. military's conventional munitions pass through CAAA. After the Donnelly meeting, the Department of Defense announced new guidance on implementation of the hiring freeze, including certain exemptions for civilian personnel. In his meeting with Secretary Speer, Donnelly asked that the Army expedite their effort to translate this guidance into a clear authorization for Crane Army leadership to exempt their employees.
