Vincennes Jasper Counselor Praised By Indiana Chief Justice

Last updated on Friday, January 27, 2017

(JASPER) - The extraordinary volunteer efforts of Bob Vogler of Jasper, a part-time counselor at Vincennes University Jasper, recently received high praise from Indiana Chief Justice Loretta H. Rush.

Speaking at her State of the Judiciary address at the State Capitol on Jan. 18, Rush said "your judiciary depends on volunteers like Bob," and then asked Vogler to stand and be recognized.

Noting that Indiana has only one probation officer for every 100 assigned offenders, Rush said that "successful community placement cannot be achieved by government alone," and cited Vogler as a volunteer making a key difference.

"In Dubois County there is a special 79-year-old community corrections volunteer named Bob Vogler. He is a civic-minded retiree who leads a partnership between local work-release and a faith-based community called Churches Embracing Offenders.

"Bob's commitment to helping offenders re-integrate back into their community is about much more than finding work for them. Bob leads 100 volunteers from eight churches that are focused on the spiritual and emotional well-being of the offenders in the program. He hosts a monthly Wednesday night meal, meets and prays with his clients, and donates his time to making their lives better," Rush said.

Dean Ackerman, interim dean at VU Jasper, said he is grateful that Vogler also serves the campus community. "Vincennes University and especially the Jasper Campus is very blessed to have Bob Vogler serving the counseling needs of its students and employees, while volunteering to assist the community at large. Bob is highly motivated, very caring, and obviously a true caretaker of his fellow citizens."

Vogler joined the VU Jasper staff during fall semester 2008.
