Senator Donnelly Requests Meeting With President Trump On Anti-Outsourcing Efforts

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly continued his fight for American workers today, sending a letter to President Trump requesting a meeting to discuss efforts to address outsourcing and encourage companies to invest in American workers and communities.

This is just the latest effort in Donnelly's years-long fight to prevent the outsourcing of Hoosier jobs. He recently stood alongside workers from Carrier, Rexnord, and UTEC who are losing their jobs to outsourcing when he announced he would be introducing legislation.

Donnelly said, in part, in the letter, "For years, I have sought to align our policies with the interests of American workers, and I appreciate the renewed attention you have brought to the challenges facing many working families in my state...I respectfully request a meeting to discuss my legislative proposals and policy ideas, as well as ways we can work together to protect American jobs..."

In November, Donnelly sent a letter to President-Elect Trump encouraging him to prioritize changes to our federal policies in order to prevent the further outsourcing of American jobs. Donnelly also urged congressional leaders in a letter to penalize companies that outsource jobs and to encourage investments in the United States. Previously, Donnelly released a white paper and sent proposals to the Senate Finance Committee in May 2016, aimed at preventing and discouraging major corporations from shipping jobs to foreign countries.

The text of today's letter is below:

January 26, 2017

President Donald J. Trump
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, D.C. 20500

Dear Mr. President,

I write to you today as a senator from the industrial heartland, who shares your strong concern about the outsourcing of American jobs and its impact on middle-class families.

As you know, outsourcing is not a new issue. For years, I have sought to align our policies with the interests of American workers, and I appreciate the renewed attention you have brought to the challenges facing many working families in my state. I believe that federal tax breaks and contracts should go to companies that invest here in the United States and those companies that outsource jobs should be penalized. That is why I recently introduced legislation intended to achieve that goal.

I also recognize that meaningful action to address the flow of American jobs to countries like Mexico and China will require Congress to act. Given our shared commitment, I respectfully request a meeting to discuss my legislative proposals and policy ideas, as well as ways we can work together to protect American jobs and strengthen our economy.

Sincerely,

Joe Donnelly
U.S. Senator
