ISP Respond To Crash, Find Vehicle Was Stolen At Gunpoint In Gary

(TIPPECANOE CO.) - Monday, at approximately 11:18 p.m. troopers from the Indiana State Police out of the Lafayette Post were sent to a crash on I-65 southbound approximately six miles south of the 168/SR 38 exit and discovered that the vehicle had been stolen out of Gary on January 7th.

Upon arrival to the scene, troopers found a 1998 dark-colored S-70 Volvo had been crashed into the cable barriers and became disabled and left abandoned.

Troopers discovered that the Volvo had been stolen out of Gary, at gunpoint a few days earlier.

A search for the driver and possible passengers lead the troopers to a second disabled vehicle that was about ½ mile north of the original crash scene with a flat tire.

The driver explained that three people had asked him for a ride to Lafayette but he refused because of the flat tire. The three He went on to tell the troopers, they then walked off the interstate into the nearby wooded area.

A search of the area turned up, two males and a female walking on County Road 900 South and County Road 700 East by Trooper Brad Mull and his Probationary Trooper Douglas Feazel. The three were detained.

The female had an injured foot and was transported by ambulance to IU Arnett Hospital. Her condition is unknown at this time. The other two were transported to the ISP post at Lafayette for further investigation.

An arrest has been made for the possession of stolen vehicle. Police arrested 19-year-old Sherrode Dreshaun Le-Narde Stamps, of Gary. He was also wanted on a warrant out of Lake County for vehicle theft.

The juvenile female was taken into custody after being released from the hospital. She had been reported missing to the Indianapolis Metro Police Department and is being held for Department of Children and Family Services out of Indianapolis.

The investigation is ongoing.

Assisting at the scene were Troopers from the ISP Post at Lafayette, Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department, Clinton County Sheriff's Department and Tippecanoe County EMS.
