Indiana State Board Of Education Elects New Chair, Approves School Corporation Grades

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana State Board of Education elected a new Chairperson to lead the board. Additionally the board approved news program proposals for Butler and Marian Universities and approved of school corporation grades.

The Board voted unanimously to elect Dr. Jennifer McCormick, the newly election Superintendent of Public Instruction, as the new Chairperson of the Indiana State Board of Education. Recent legislation passed by the Indiana General Assembly allowed for the State Board to vote for its own Chairperson for the first time this year.

Additionally, the Board voted 7-0 to approve of a new program proposal for Butler University. Gordon Hendry abstained from voting. The new program will offer a new licensure in secondary (5-12) exceptional needs: mild intervention. The program will become an added specialization within Butler's existing set of secondary areas of specialization. The board also approved to allow Marian University to offer a new school counselor (initial licensure) program. The program will include "cooperative, independent and experiential learning" and will be incorporated within the Master of Science in Counseling - School Counseling track degree program. This passed 8-0.

The Board voted 8-0 to approve of the final school corporation grades. Corporations will now have 30 days to appeal their grade to the Indiana State Board of Education.

Finally, the Board received status updates from Indianapolis Public Schools on John Marshall, George Washington and Arlington Community High Schools. The Board also received an update on Hoosier Virtual Academy from Ball State University who is the school's charter authorizer.
