(ANDERSON) - In honor of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Anderson University is suspending classes, Monday, January 16, 2017.
Instead, students will have opportunities to participate in service projects, demonstrations and other celebratory events in remembrance of King's legacy. The events of the day will be centered around King's words, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
The community is invited to participate in a 1960s Civil Rights Rally Re-enactment in Miller Chapel at the School of Theology and Christian Ministry. The re-enactment will be facilitated by Michael Thigpen, director of the Cultural Resource Center at AU, and will highlight the peace and justice marches that were a part of the civil rights movement.
Shuttle service will be provided for those who would like to participate in the citywide MLK Jr. Day Celebration at the Paramount Theatre.
"As we embark on this 100th centennial celebration of Anderson University, it is so fitting that we acknowledge the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who embodied the reason we continue to pursue reconciliation, diversity, and inclusion for all humanity," said Michael Thigpen. "In the words of Dr. King, 'In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends.' Anderson University was not silent then, and we refuse to be silent now."
Following the citywide event, participants will march to Reardon Lobby on the AU campus, with campus organizations and departments carrying signs and banners reflecting support for equal rights, justice and unity.
Various campus activities will be held between 2:30 - 5 p.m., including a simulated Tunnel of Oppression (an interactive series of displays about the history of oppression in the United States) and Prayer Labyrinth in Nicholson Library. The day concludes with a free showing of the movie Race (the Jesse Owens Story) in Reardon Auditorium at 7 p.m.
On Tuesday, Jan. 17, a presentation titled "The Prophetic Words of King: A Creative Arts Presentation" will be offered in Reardon Auditorium on the. Also, the Black Student Association will sponsor a session titled "Conversation about the Dream. Achieved? Defeated? What Now?" in Decker 133 at 7 p.m.
