Indian Tribe In Northern Indiana To Announce Casino Plans

Last updated on Thursday, December 8, 2016

(SOUTH BEND) - An Indian tribe in northern Indiana that recently celebrated becoming the first tribe in the state to have land returned to it from the federal government is ready to announce its plans to build a casino in South Bend.

Members of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi have scheduled a news conference for Wednesday. They have indicated in documents previously submitted to the Bureau of Indian Affairs that they are planning to spend $400 million on a development that will include a tribal village and casino with an 18-story hotel.

The documents also show the tribe plans to have up to 3,000 slot machines, which would make it the state's largest casino.

Other casinos in Indiana are concerned the new casino will hurt their businesses.
