Last updated on Wednesday, December 7, 2016

(BRAZIL) - Authorities say three people including two young children are dead following a house fire in Clay County.

Fire Chief Jake Bennett says four people were taken to a hospital from the scene of the Monday night fire at the two-story home, including the three who died.

It happened Monday night at a residence near Vandalia and Mechanic streets in the Brazil.

The condition of the fourth person wasn't immediately known.

Reporters say the deceased include an 18-year-old mother and her month-old daughter. A four-year-old child also died in the fire.

Officials believe a large family of 14 to 16 people lived in the house. Two dogs also were removed from the home.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
