(HARRISON CRAWFORD STATE FOREST) - Indiana Conservation Officers, along with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department and local rescue personnel rescued a Corydon man after finding him unconscious in the Harrison-Crawford State Forest late Wednesday evening.
Officers says 59-year-old Ronald Harris, was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital for hypothermia and minor injuries.
Shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Harrison County Dispatch received a call from Harris' relatives and co-workers that were concerned for his safety. Harris had left work and was believed to have been headed to the Harrison-Crawford State Forest, where he had hiked and hunted in the past.
Indiana Conservation Officers, the Harrison County Sheriff's Department, Harrison Township Fire Department, and Harrison County EMS responded and eventually located Harris' vehicle in a parking area along Old Forest Road.
Indiana Conservation Officers deployed their K-9 "Derby", and tracked the rugged terrain for over an hour with no sign of Harris.
Since Harris was not answering his cell phone, and with temperatures dropping, both Harrison County and Indiana Conservation Officers' Dispatch "pinged" his cell phone to better narrow their search. With the aid of GPS coordinates, Derby tracked directly to Harris, who was found blue and unconscious on an incline, with his airway constricted by a small tree supporting his weight, after an apparent fall.
After re-positioning Harris and clearing his airway, officers and rescue personnel treated him for hypothermia and carried him out of the woods in a Stokes basket, where he was immediately airlifted for treatment.
