Indiana Senator Pushing Plans For Gulf War Memorial

Last updated on Wednesday, November 16, 2016

(INDIANAPOLIS) - U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly says he’ll seek congressional approval of a site for a memorial in Washington honoring veterans of the 1991 Persian Gulf war.

The Indiana Democrat has been working with organizers of the National Desert Storm War Memorial project and says those veterans deserve prominent recognition for their service.

Organizers hope to pick early next year between two sites near the Lincoln Memorial for the project and soon step up work to raise about $25 million in private funding. They say 383 Americans died in the war to oust Iraqi troops from Kuwait.

Indianapolis resident Christine Jensen's son, Brian Simpson, was among those killed during the war. She says many young people don't know about the war and the thousands of American troops who took part.
