(UNDATED) - Indiana’s 9th Congressional District will remain in Republican hands for at least another two years.
Bolstered by his own pocketbook and support from a Super PAC, Republican Trey Hollingsworth, a businessman from Jeffersonville, overcame questions about his residency before moving into the state last year, beating Democrat Shelli Yoder soundly with Libertarian Russell Brooksbank a distant third. With 84 percent of the vote total in, Hollingsworth was declared the winner with 54 percent of the vote, compared to 41 percent for Yoder.
Yoder won Monroe County, 36,049 to 19,314, but could not overcome Hollingsworth's strength in the rest of the district.
Despite close polls, Hollingsworth pulled ahead of the Monroe County Council member following a heated competition that became vicious during the final days as polling showed the race remaining tight.
It followed hesitant predictions from pundits, who said though Hollingsworth faced disadvantages, he had a likely lead because of the district's demographics.
And though experts wondered whether the "Tennessee Trey" moniker coined during the highly contested Republican primary might cause some in the party to turn away, Hollingsworth defeated an opponent who had been on the ballot before. In 2012, Yoder ran against U.S. Rep. Todd Young, who currently represents the 9th District and left it for his now successful run for U.S. Senate.
