(UNDATED) - With the potential for gusty winds, thunderstorms, colder temperatures and a mix of rain and snow to different parts of the state, Indiana Homeland Security is advising citizens to be aware of developing weather conditions.
"With the potential for winds and storms, watching the weather more closely makes sense," said John Erickson, Director of Public Affairs for state homeland security. "The leading edge of a weather system like this can be volatile. Don't be caught unaware." Citizens are encouraged to stay aware of changing conditions by monitoring local media, or using a mobile weather app or an all-hazards weather radio.
At this time, the National Weather Service is advising those in Northern Indiana to be aware of strong wind gusts of more than 35 mph. Gusty conditions can cause problems for high-profile vehicles such as semi-truck trailers or recreational vehicles, and drivers should exercise caution.
The National Weather Service says Central Indiana could see scattered thunderstorms with a chance of some snow mixing in at times. Those planning to travel should observe local conditions and plan for extra travel time.
Southern Indiana may see strong thunderstorms that could potentially produce damaging wind gusts.
All residents should consider taking time to remove leaves and debris from storm drains, as long as they can do so safely. Clogged drains can cause localized street flooding in areas that experience heavy rain. Homeowners, businesses and renters are also encouraged to tie down or bring in any outside furniture, decorations or items that may blow away.
