BMV's Ride Safe Indiana Completes Record Breaking Inaugural Season

Last updated on Wednesday, November 16, 2016

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) Commissioner Kent Abernathy says the first training season for Ride Safe Indiana (RSI) is drawing to a close with a record number of riders completing the motorcycle safety course.

The safety program fills the statewide need for quality training to lower the number of motorcycle-related fatalities and injuries.

"Mild fall weather extended our riding season and provided more opportunities for new and veteran riders to complete RSI safety training," said Commissioner Abernathy. "We set a goal to train 6,000 riders within our first year and I'm glad to say we exceeded our goal. Not only will riders benefit from the safety training, those who share the road in cars and trucks will too."

As of November 13, more than 7,450 riders completed the safety course at 27 locations all around the state, the most ever to complete motorcycle rider training in a single year in Indiana. RSI was formed this year to improve and expand rider safety training.

The RSI program partners with 16 providers to offer basic rider courses and advanced rider training for new and experienced riders. For a complete list of providers and training locations, visit www.RideSafeIndiana.com.

Because of growing popularity of three-wheeled motorcycles, a certification course for instructors to teach classes using those machines was developed this year and the first student riders completed the course in August.

RSI added more companies to teach courses resulting in increased customer service and improved course availability. Curriculum used by RSI to train and certify instructors who teach the course, was improved, standardized and streamlined in 2016.
