Three Fort Wayne Officers On Leave Following Two Police Shootings

Last updated on Wednesday, October 12, 2016

(FORT WAYNE) - Police in Fort Wayne say three officers have been placed on five-day paid administrative leave following two fatal shootings last week.

Public Safety Director Rusty York says that in both cases police were trying to protect others and themselves. He says the leave is standard procedure in such cases.

On Friday, a SWAT team fatally shot a 36-year-old Joseph S. Schroeder while he held a child hostage at knifepoint. Police say Officers Anthony Shefferly, who has nine years with the department, and Cameron Norris, who has six years, were involved.

On Saturday evening, police say 62-year-old Charles Antrup of Fort Wayne ignored repeated commands to drop a knife, then approached an officer. Police say Officer Christopher Hawthorne shot him, then kicked away the knife and tried to give first aid.
