Officer On Leave Following Fatal Police Action Shooting

(FORT WAYNE) - An officer with Fort Wayne police is on paid administrative leave after fatally shooting a man who was armed with a knife.

WOWO reports that officers were called to the Hallmark Inn at East Washington and Coliseum at around 8:50 Saturday night due to a man in the parking lot, armed with a knife, threatening to cut someone.

When officers tried to get the suspect to drop the knife, police said he lunged at officers, prompting them to open fire. The man fell the the ground, and officers kicked the knife away from the suspect's hand. They then reportedly tried to administer first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the man seemed to be intoxicated during the time of the incident.
